In the aftermath of the battle against Korell, change sweeps through the surrounding lands. Edric and Jaerit have parted ways, only to find themselves struggling to adapt to lives of responsibility and privilege neither of them wanted.
While Jaerit is left to shoulder his burdens alone, Edric turns to Jez to help him through the difficult transition. A heart-rending revelation, however, causes an upheaval in their lives that throws both of their futures into question. Fighting to find balance in his new life, Edric begins to discover that prophecy has more in store for him than he ever imagined, with potentially tragic consequences.
Meanwhile, given an unexpected second chance at life, Kas finds herself abruptly hurled into a battle for survival so terrible, that even death isn’t the worst possible outcome.

Forced into hiding on the eve of war, Jaerit and Kas’s lives are shaken by the appearance of two strangers who reveal a side of Kas’s past she never imagined. Thrust into an entirely foreign life, Kas finds herself battling, not only to adapt to her unfamiliar circumstances, but also to simply survive them.
Meanwhile, Edric and Jez find themselves drawn back into each other’s lives by the circumstances surrounding the approaching war. An unexpected discovery, however, changes everything in an instant, and they find themselves faced with a series of difficult choices with no guarantee of success, or even of survival.
